For many years, students have expressed a growing need for increased access to high-quality fitness facilities on campus. With existing gym and workout spaces frequently dedicated to supporting the university’s thriving NCAA Division II athletics program, undergraduate students have faced limited availability for personal fitness.

Thanks to the extraordinary generosity of the Ryan Family Foundation, students will soon have access to the Lawrence Ryan Fitness Pavilion, a transformative new space dedicated to supporting students in their fitness journey.

The new Lawrence Ryan Fitness Pavilion will offer approximately 1,500 square feet of indoor and outdoor workout space, including weight-lifting equipment; a 3,400 square foot multipurpose turf area; a 2,500 square foot yoga deck turf area; and a 2,300 square foot outdoor rubber surfaced area. Strategically positioned at the west end of the track, the Lawrence Ryan Fitness Pavilion will be an integral part of the athletics complex, providing additional access to wellness and fitness resources for the student body.

Point Loma is incredibly grateful to the Ryan Family Foundation for their continued investment in the Point Loma campus. David Ryan shared, “Beyond creating opportunities for students’ physical fitness alone, it is our hope that the natural beauty and serenity of this location will help inspire a more global wellbeing experience, as it will facilitate not only improved mental health, but a sense of spiritual peace as well, through the presence of the Holy Spirit. The opportunity to name the facility in honor of my late brother, Lawrence ‘Larry’ Ryan, who was a PLNU graduate and surfed regularly in the exact location this site overlooks, makes our participation in this project that much more deeply meaningful for us.”

We continue to give thanks to God for His provision and for the generosity of donors who make projects like this possible. Through the generosity of the Ryan Family Foundation’s lead gift, there is momentum in the donor community for this project to be fully funded by the anticipated opening in August 2026.
